CURILEROS CHILDREN

Curileros' work consists on taking curiles, little mollusks that are in the plantations of mangrove trees: they are salad forests in the coast areas. Children spend many hours in the wet areas' mud, to do this activity. The most alarming fact of this work is the children's need to smoke cigars or to take stimulants to avoid bites or not to feel the pain provoked by bites.

To extract curiles, children have to be submerged until waist in mud during a lot of hours per day or per night, until dawn, because they must extract an average of sixty exemplaries.

Dangers produced by this activity are huge. They are aggravated by the fact that this activity must be also done by night. Children are exposed to bites, to infections in wounds made inside the mud, and to be attacked by animals of the area.

In addition, children can become addicted to tobacco and to stimulants taken to avoid mosquitoes or to bear them, and also to counteract the tiredness and sleepiness accumulated because of hard working day.

In addition, it's demonstrated that the majority of these children have respiratory problems and underfeeding too: in fact, the need of being always unsettled of tide climb and descent, prevent eating at fixed hours.
