WORK IN SUGAR CANE PRODUCTION |
 |
Biggest risks identified by both children and teenagers involved in sugar cane production are cuts provoked by machetes and viper bites. Moreover, the hardest identified ill-treat is related to the pressure to fulfill the entrusted work. This is the reason why they are afraid of not fulfilling the established production goal. Main negative aspects are hard working conditions of 12 hours working days. Concerning girls, they must fulfill kitchen tasks, which is also identified like the most positive thing, from the other extreme point of view.
Both children and teenagers' health problems are very related to their living and working conditions. They generally live in precarious camps with high levels of overcrowding and without access to basic services such as potable water or solid residues system. Moreover, they are exposed during more than 12 hours per day to hard working conditions, to weather inclemency in reed beds, and to a deficient alimentary diet as well. These factors make this population a very vulnerable group to infectious, contagious, respiratory and intestinal illnesses, without forgetting frequent work accidents.
